Brief
University Hospital Limerick is managed by the HSE Mid West region, which serves over 400,000 people across Clare, Limerick, and North Tipperary, the project was instigated to modernise the digital signage across hospitals and health centres. The goal being to align with HSE branding and improve communication for both public and staff audiences.
Key deliverables included branded multi-zone screen layouts, editable templates for announcements and emergency updates, and a flexible content distribution system using PLI meta-tags for targeted messaging. The system supports both public-facing and internal screens. Training and resources were also provided to enable HSE staff to manage and update content independently.
Approach
We designed multizone layouts for reception and waiting areas, featuring weather, news tickers, welcome messages, and QR codes linking to social media. Staff-facing screens used simpler layouts with time, date, weather, and news. A full-screen layout was added for multi-screen areas, and a paediatrics version with softer colours and cartoon galleries was created for the Emergency Department. All layouts were pre-built in our CMS, ready for migration.
A distribution map was created using screen locations and content types, allowing us to minimise playlists, folders, and channels. New NTBs were pre-configured with content, enabling offline playback post-installation.
Once the old CMS was replaced with a virtual one, we installed all layout packages and day-one media, then created and published all folders, playlists, and channels. Existing devices were remotely updated to subscribe to the new CMS and retrieve content.
We also enabled full-screen takeovers for alerts by uploading content to an event folder and adjusting the schedule. Finally, we provided Canva templates so the HSE team could create and manage their own notices.
Result
Using just three shared playlists, three folders, and four channels, HSE staff can distribute a single media file across 30+ screens—or use PLI values to target specific ones. This setup allows both broad updates and precise control. Emergency messages can also be deployed instantly via channel scheduling.
